Understanding Roofing Squares
Roofing materials are sold by the "square" — one roofing square covers 100 square feet. To find squares needed, divide total roof area (already accounting for pitch) by 100. A 2,000 sq ft footprint with a 6/12 pitch requires about 2,240 sq ft of actual roof surface, or 23 squares.
Roof Pitch Factor Table
| Pitch (rise/run) | Pitch Factor | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 2/12 | 1.02 | Low pitch — nearly flat |
| 4/12 | 1.05 | Low pitch — common on shallow roofs |
| 6/12 | 1.12 | Medium pitch — most residential |
| 8/12 | 1.20 | Medium-steep |
| 10/12 | 1.30 | Steep |
| 12/12 | 1.41 | Very steep — 45° angle |
Shingles vs Other Materials
Asphalt shingles (3-tab or architectural) are the most common roofing material in North America, lasting 20–30 years. Metal roofing lasts 40–70 years but costs 2–3× more. Wood shake has superior aesthetics but requires more maintenance and may not meet fire codes in some regions.
What Is the Roof Calculator?
This roofing calculator estimates the materials for a shingle roof: the true roof area accounting for pitch, the number of roofing squares, and the bundles of shingles to order including waste. Roofers measure in squares, one square is 100 square feet of roof surface, and standard architectural shingles pack three bundles per square. The critical step homeowners miss is the pitch multiplier: a roof's sloped surface is larger than the house footprint beneath it, by 12% at a 4/12 pitch and 41% at a 9/12 pitch.
Roof Calculator Example
A 40 × 30 ft house with 1-ft overhangs has a 42 × 32 ft roof plan = 1,344 sq ft. At a 6/12 pitch the multiplier is √(1 + 0.25) = 1.118, so the true area is 1,503 sq ft, just over 15 squares.
With 10% waste: 16.5 squares → 50 bundles of architectural shingles (3 bundles per square, rounded up). Add underlayment (about 4 rolls at 4 squares per roll), 1 roll of starter strip per 100 ft of eaves, ridge cap shingles for hips and ridges, and roughly 320 nails per square.
Understanding Roof
Beyond Shingles: the Full Material List
A complete re-roof includes underlayment (synthetic or felt) across the deck, ice-and-water membrane along eaves and valleys in cold climates, metal drip edge on all edges, starter strips at eaves and rakes, ridge cap shingles, ventilation components, and flashing at chimneys, walls, and penetrations. These typically add 20–30% to the shingle cost, budget from the calculator's square count, since nearly all of them scale with the same number.
Reading Pitch Safely
Measure pitch from a ladder at the gable end or inside the attic: hold a level horizontally against the slope, mark 12 inches out, and measure vertically down to the roof, that vertical distance is the rise. Phone inclinometer apps are accurate too (pitch in degrees converts as rise = 12 × tanθ). Walking a roof above 6/12 requires staging and fall protection; leave steep-slope measurement to the estimate visit.
Estimating Cost from Squares
Materials for architectural shingles typically run $120–$180 per square; professional installation brings all-in costs to roughly $450–$800 per square depending on region, pitch, stories, and tear-off. The calculator's square figure times a local per-square quote gives a sanity-check budget before contractor bids arrive, and makes bid comparisons apples-to-apples, since every legitimate bid states its square count.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a roofing square?
One square = 100 square feet of roof surface. It is the industry's pricing and ordering unit: contractors quote per square, shingles are packaged three bundles per square (for standard architectural shingles), and underlayment rolls are labeled by squares of coverage. A 2,000 sq ft roof is a 20-square job.
How does roof pitch change the area?
The sloped surface is the hypotenuse over the flat footprint, so multiply the plan area by √(1 + (rise/run)²). Multipliers: 4/12 → 1.054, 6/12 → 1.118, 8/12 → 1.202, 10/12 → 1.302, 12/12 → 1.414. Skipping this on a steep roof under-orders materials by a third or more.
How much waste factor should I add?
10% for a simple gable (two rectangles). 15% for hip roofs and roofs with valleys or dormers, cut shingles at every hip and valley become offcuts. Complex roofs with multiple intersecting planes can reach 20%. Waste is not optional: cut pieces, starter courses, and damaged shingles are certainties, and matching a dye lot later is difficult.
How many bundles of shingles do I need per square?
Standard architectural (laminate) shingles: 3 bundles per square. Some heavyweight designer shingles need 4–5 bundles per square, check the wrapper's coverage figure. Three-tab shingles are also 3 bundles per square. A bundle weighs 60–80 lb, so a 20-square roof means moving around 2 tons of shingles.
Should I repair, re-cover, or replace my roof?
Isolated damage on a roof under 15 years old is usually repairable. Building codes commonly allow one overlay (a second shingle layer) but it shortens the new layer's life, hides deck problems, and adds weight, most roofers advise against it. Widespread curling, granule loss, or a roof near its rated life is replacement territory: tearing off reveals and fixes the deck.
