This calculator uses the start date of your last menstrual period and your average cycle length to estimate future period dates, ovulation, and fertile windows. The method assumes a regular cycle — in reality, cycles vary by 2–7 days even in healthy individuals.
Understanding Your Fertile Window
Ovulation typically occurs approximately 14 days before the start of the next period (not 14 days after the period begins). The fertile window spans the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself, because sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days. The egg is viable for only 12–24 hours after release.

This is the detail most people miss: with a 30-day cycle, ovulation lands on cycle day 16, and with a 26-day cycle on day 12. The luteal phase stays near 14 days while the follicular phase stretches or shrinks, which is why the count-back method beats the count-forward day-14 rule.

The follicular phase runs from day one of bleeding to ovulation: rising FSH matures a follicle, estrogen rebuilds the uterine lining, and an LH surge triggers ovulation. Its length varies widely, this phase is where short and long cycles differ. The luteal phase, ovulation to the next period, is comparatively fixed at 12–16 days: the empty follicle releases progesterone, and if no embryo implants, hormone withdrawal starts the next period.

Around ovulation many people notice clearer, stretchier cervical mucus (like raw egg white), a slight rise of about 0.3–0.5°C in basal body temperature the day after ovulation, mild one-sided pelvic ache (mittelschmerz), and a positive LH test strip 24–36 hours beforehand. When is the fertile window, exactly?
Sperm survive up to five days in fertile cervical mucus and the egg lives about 12–24 hours after ovulation, so conception is possible from roughly five days before ovulation through the day after. Probability peaks in the two days before ovulation. This is why calendar-based prediction alone is unreliable for avoiding pregnancy, ovulation timing shifts.
Can I use this calculator for contraception?
No. Calendar estimates cannot confirm ovulation, only predict it, and normal cycle variability means fertile days can arrive earlier or later than predicted. Evidence-based fertility-awareness methods require daily observations (basal temperature, cervical mucus, or hormone tests) with proper instruction, and even then have meaningful failure rates compared with other contraception.
What can delay or change my period?
Pregnancy first, then: stress, illness (including fevers), travel across time zones, significant weight loss or gain, intense training, thyroid conditions, PCOS, perimenopause, and starting or stopping hormonal birth control. One late period is rarely alarming; three or more missed periods without pregnancy (secondary amenorrhea) merits medical evaluation.
