GST / VAT Calculator
Calculate GST and VAT amounts. Add or remove tax from any price at any tax rate.
What Is the GST / VAT Calculator?
The GST/VAT Calculator helps you add or remove Goods and Services Tax (GST) or Value Added Tax (VAT) from any price. Enter a base price and tax rate to compute the tax amount and final price — or enter an inclusive (tax-included) price to extract the original pre-tax value.
Formula
How to Use
Choose whether your entered price is exclusive (before tax) or inclusive (already includes tax). Enter the price amount and the GST/VAT percentage rate. The calculator shows the tax amount, the price without tax, and the price with tax.
Example Calculation
Product price: $200 (exclusive), GST rate: 10% → GST Amount = $200 × 0.10 = $20 → Total Price = $220. Reverse (inclusive): $220 total, 10% GST → Pre-tax = $220 ÷ 1.10 = $200 → GST = $20.
Understanding GST / VAT
GST and VAT are multi-stage consumption taxes collected at each step of the supply chain. Businesses collect the tax from customers, deduct input tax they have already paid on purchases, and remit the difference to the government. Understanding how to calculate GST and VAT is essential for invoicing, pricing, bookkeeping, and compliance.
The calculator works both ways: add tax to a net price (tax-exclusive) or strip tax out of a gross price (tax-inclusive). The reverse calculation is particularly useful when an invoice shows a total and you need to determine the underlying pre-tax amount for accounting purposes.
Tax rates vary by country, jurisdiction, and product category. Some categories like food, medicine, or education may be zero-rated or exempt. This tool supports any percentage rate, making it useful whether you are calculating Australian GST, European VAT, or Indian GST across different tax slabs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between GST and VAT?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) and VAT (Value Added Tax) are both consumption taxes applied to goods and services. The main differences are in how they are structured across supply chains and which countries use which name. Functionally, both add a percentage to prices.
Which countries use GST vs VAT?
Countries using GST include Australia (10%), Canada (5%), India (5–28% by category), New Zealand (15%), and Singapore (9%). VAT is used by the EU (typically 20–25%), UK (20%), and many other countries.
How do I calculate tax-inclusive price?
Tax-inclusive price = Original Price × (1 + Tax Rate/100). For example, $100 + 15% VAT = $100 × 1.15 = $115.
How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?
Divide the inclusive price by (1 + Tax Rate/100). For a $115 price with 15% VAT: $115 ÷ 1.15 = $100 pre-tax.
